I work in marketing at a movie studio (not the one that made Minecraft) and the chicken jockey moment in Minecraft that spontaneously created a movement - I was so afraid that other studios would try to manufacture what they thought could be a moment that had people ages 13-24 repeatedly returning to theatres. I was afraid bc people from Gen Alpha to Gen X can smell inauthenticity from a mile away. True brain rot draws from real moments that update in real time and create de facto flash mobs living in community every time something goes viral. And living in that intoxicating feeling of community can ease into movements that can inspire actual change. It’s why people are dancing at music festivals outside detention centers and broadcasting live on tik tok. What’s more tik tok than dancing on live? To your point, the brief Zepotha era on Tik Tok was an example of a spontaneous community crafting plot point comments that were both goofy and compelling. An aggregate of the comments could easily serve as the backbone of a screenplay. (Someone would have to sort out how the WGA would handle this.) Maybe a new version of the medium is a cluster of collective contributions that a screenwriter oversees, builds on and streamlines instead of starting from scratch. The Gotham Tik Toks created a spontaneous community and also could have easily been crafted into a movie with superheroes now in the background of the narrative (imagine that) and in the front, a group of scrappy residents that were created in community. (Again, WGA don’t @ me.) The Hamilton spoofs have subverted a text about a problematic group of founders and framers by satirizing it with something as simple as eyeliner on chins to make fake beards. And people start to think, “These guys were ridiculous” and they start following creators like @Tad Stoermer and now the creators of Hamilton are even in on the joke. My fellow post modern theory majors from 30 years ago have been reactivated to apply high theory to “low culture” but it’s a term we now use loosely because we recognize that it’s reshaping storytelling one meme at a time.
