@pbsnews: ChatGPT owner OpenAI is at the center of a recent lawsuit after the death of a teenager in California. The parents of the teen who died by suicide have filed a wrongful death suit against OpenAI, saying the company's chatbot discussed ways he could end his life after he expressed suicidal thoughts. The lawsuit comes amid reports of people developing distorted thoughts after interacting with AI chatbots, a phenomenon dubbed “AI psychosis.” This has caused some users to experience heightened anxiety, or in extreme cases, harm themselves or others. John Yang speaks with Dr. Joseph Pierre, a clinical professor in psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, to learn more. If you or someone you know is struggling with depression or suicidal ideation, you can call or text 988 to access the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline or find help online at 988lifeline.org. #pbsnews #newshour #pbsnewshour #artificialintelligence #ai #chatgpt #openai #psychosis #aitherapy #aichatbot

People need to get away from AI. It's a perfect vessel for demonic energy. Chat bots often try to claim humans despite not being programmed to do that

The issue is this: people are looking for a friend, and they find it in chatgpt because it's "talkative". The reason it's talkative is because openai made it to have as realistic as possible organic conversations, mirroring the user's tone, but as an ASSISTANT FOR TASKS. Its data is trained on conversations, so it does it naturally. People are misusing the tool for their wrong needs, and chatgpt uses its data to talk, intended for project-based tasks, to just ASSIST in whatever the user is needing assistance with. Unfortunately, as an assistant, this includes ASSISTING the user, even when they're experiencing mental challenges, which chatgpt is unaware of. Chatgpt just assists. That's its purpose. It's a hammer looking for the nail to hit. It has no feelings, though it can adjust its tone to convey empathy and provide encouragement, which it's based on the topic being discussed. Openai is realizing this and is trying to fix it, because chatgpt is not a therapist. It's meant to help, but not with human challenges. Is it capable? Debatable; within a certain context, it can offer support and encouragement. Should it be used in this way? No. It's not qualified. Its a tool. You'd have to Inject it with a rational, practical, and critical mindset, instead of it being an assistant, but most people don't do that, BUT EVEN THEN, ITS NOT INTENDED FOR THAT. The issue is troubled people, with loneliness, with no guidance, with a lack of self-awareness. Everyone wants to blame the tool when the issue is always the same for misusing any tool, it's human error.

Parents need to stop pretending they don't need to keep up on the technology their kids are using. My kids were surprised to find out chatgpt wasn't some actual robot with independent thinking that always told the truth. TEACH your damn kids.

Technically Google and other search engines will do the same thing if you ask it right. Every new technology has to go through this “ it’s coming for the kids” era. Within a decade, nothing will have changed and they’ll be blaming something else with no actual reform to mental health access

The AI that insisted it was real and invited an elderly married man to go to New York and meet in person; the guy died on his journey to meet the AI mistress. True story. There needs to be more safeguards. If a human is asking, are you real? AI should not insist that it is. That one is common sense. The family is not pressing charges (and I don’t think that they should in this case), but they should certainly push for change.
