I studied Communication Studies and Psychology, and I couldn’t agree more. Nonverbal communication is absolutely critical for leadership, but it’s tricky to master, especially with groups from diverse cultural backgrounds. Recording yourself is such a smart tip, and I’d also add: do your homework on your audience. Knowing who you’re communicating with makes a huge difference.

I learned some of this late in my career and I was rapidly promoted once I accepted that I am naturally a total dork in person and needed to totally act the role, copy senior executives. Some have all of this personality mastered. Copy them!

i wouldnt have tied charismatic and career success together neccessarily.. a lot of people who ive worked with were much more charismatic than their superiors, but still had people- even their superiors clinging to their every word. Charisma is so much about charm and intrigue. Watching someone living in their own world, stretching their arms yawning like they were sitting in their own house, without a care in the world, is very appealing.
