my life in Tokyo :
Once you get out of the touristy neighborhoods (and big cities) you’ll see a lot more relaxed style, even sweatpants and old/not stylish clothing. When I venture an hour from Shibuya, still within Tokyo, it feels much more suburban and people don’t dress like they do in Shibuya. When I first moved to Tokyo I felt self conscious about my clothing and I talked to a friend about how everyone always looks so fancy, especially on Friday or Saturday night. And she said something that makes sense - especially on the weekends, a lot of the Japanese people you see don’t live in Tokyo, or they don’t live in these trendy areas. So, when they have the chance to visit, they get extra dressed up. It would be like being from small town Ohio and spending the weekend in a fancy part of NYC.
