BMW N47 Timing Chains Are at the BACK! Here’s What’s Involved. • BMW 3 Series 2008 - N47D20 2.0 diesel timing chain replacement. In this video, I’ll give you a short overview of one of the more involved jobs on the BMW N47 diesel engine - replacing the complete timing chain drive. • The main difficulty with the N47 is the location of the timing chains. Unlike many engines where the timing system is located at the front, the N47 timing chains are positioned at the rear of the engine, on the transmission side. • This means that gaining access to the timing system requires substantial disassembly, including removal of the transmission, oil pan and valve cover before the timing chain components can be properly accessed. • The N47D20 uses three timing chains, making the procedure even more involved. Correct disassembly, component inspection and reassembly all require careful attention to the timing system and engine locking positions. • BMW’s official repair procedure calls for engine removal when replacing the N47 timing chain system.
