Sabbath Nugget #18: As we have seen in our last few posts, the Sabbath is a spiritual rest, and cannot be legislated because only the Spirit of God can give spiritual rest. When we rest from our physical labors it is only a sign of the spiritual rest that God gives us. This is why Sabbath-keeping is not legalism or salvation by works. We in no way obtain salvation by keeping the Sabbath physically. The purpose of the Sabbath is to remind us to rest in the Lord, to rest in the knowledge that He alone can save us, to know that the Lord sanctifies us. We do not sanctify ourselves. The Sabbath shows us the power by which we may be saved if we choose to accept it and submit to it. We cannot force people to keep the Sabbath anymore than we can force anyone to be saved. This is the Spirit’s work. We also learned that labor comes from God. It was given in the garden of Eden. Adam was to work every day. And the Sabbath commandment, which tells us to rest on the seventh-day, ALSO tells us to work six days. “Six days shalt thou labor and do all thy work…” So we are to work. We understand from our previous study that refraining from physical labor does not at all constitute the sum of Sabbath-keeping. And yet God requires us to cease all of our own work, of any kind, on the Sabbath. (Is 58:13,14; Ex 20:8-11). Why does He require this if refraining from physical labor still does not save us? The purpose of giving us time away from our work is to impress upon us a much needed lesson of trust. As we contemplate the works of God without interruption, ceasing from all our labour by which we earn a living, we are reminded that God supplies us with all our blessings - not only with spiritual blessing but temporal necessities as well. Even our labor is dependent on God. The fact that we have the strength and ability to work, the fact that we have a job at all is all because God has given these things to us. When we cease from labor, we acknowledge that, although we labor for our daily bread as we are commanded, we are still dependent on Him, because He provides everything, including the ability to work. Some people ask: “If I keep the Sabbath, how will I make a living? I will lose my position or lose money. Saturday is the principal day of business, and how can I get a job that will give me Sabbath off?” This question is asked because we don’t understand the nature and purpose of the Sabbath. The Sabbath itself points out the answer. The idea of Sabbath observance is perfect trust in God, whose power brought the universe from nothing, and upholds it and whose love for His creatures is equal to His power to do them good. This means that even a farmer, who is dependent on the timing of his harvest, will not bring in the harvest on the Sabbath, even if it seems like the only day that he can do it because of the weather. It may seem that to work on the Sabbath is the only hope of securing the crop. But those that know the Lord and the purpose of the Sabbath, will know that the God who alone can make the corn grow is fully able to protect it, or to make ample provision for us in another way if it should be destroyed. This is the same faith that the 3 worthies had as they were faced with the fiery furnace. “If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.” Daniel 3:17 We must have this same faith when it comes to Sabbath keeping. #Sabbath #rest #Bible #truth
