@antoinettecealopes: Replying to @sally Am I having a good time? YES. Am I also being critical? YES. (And those two things can coexist!) 📚 #BookTok #fourthwing #ironflame
IMO, the Fourth wing is a fun and accessible read, especially for those who aren’t super into fantasy. But for the level of popularity and hype around this series, do I think it’s a literary work of art, superior to other books in the genre, or this super original concept, nope.

if you watch some of her interviews, and it's nothing to do with Canon so that's the only reason I pay any attention to it, she talks about wanting this series to be an introductory for people who are tiptoeing into the fantasy world. so she says, that she wrote it to feel essentially very basic so that people wouldn't be overwhelmed and I would say that she succeeded, but in a good way.

Yes!! I like the overall story, but it feels like a pull between life and death AND high school boy drama

Did you also feel acotar felt YA? I thought FW writing was better and more adult than acotar.

Honestly the writing is a bit of a mess, especially in the latest book but I read it for the dragon drama and i enjoyed that part. I might watch this as a show, but not if it’s just “young” teen drama.

My issue with the books is all the anachronisms. Rubber soles? Ink pens? “Development era”? Fighting with swords? But no gunpowder/guns? It’s very obvious she is not a fantasy reader. Only interesting characters are Dain, Sloane,

It’s got a very episodic quality to it as well as a somewhat overdramatized and childish/teen tone like a CW show as you mention. That being said, certain things like “Riders fought as hard they partied and we partied hard” or whatever I had me like 😒

The line by line is fine. The world building and character development needs some work. But also, who cares when they are selling so well!

I feel the same, I felt the end of the 1st book was too predictable and I ended up putting down Iron Flame.

I completely agree! I love the story, but I struggle with RY's writing sometimes. The books are meant to appeal to a wider audience, but sometimes it's so juvenile, especially compared to other authors who are writing similar things

I think it’s because Rebecca is inexperienced fantasy author. Some of world building a after thought. I enjoyed the books, but the were vibes reads. I haven’t read her romance novels, so don’t know if they are less jarring.

Good analysis. I kind of enjoy the YA feel with the story. It’s very accessible and feels less highbrow that a lot of legacy fantasy is. It’s not perfect, but it’s fun

I’m not a native English speaker, so for me the writing felt very good! It’s been a while since I’ve read in English, so it was easy for me to read, and got me back into reading! It was also very quickly paced, I loved it. In comparison TOG and even acotar seemed sooo slow for me, and language was sometimes difficult in the beginning.

I feel like we get that juvenile writing ESPECIALLY in Violets POV which is mostly the whole story thus far, because she is SO sheltered before going into the riders quadrant and it feels like SHE is a bit juvenile. So it may be a narrator issue. But I do agree the writing style will absolutely translate other media. RY contemporary romance books are so good though and definitely written less juvenile.

Violet was very annoying in IF! Also agree that sometimes it does have a YA feel to it

When I heard the hype around this series, I was super excited to read it. Once I started reading, I just couldn’t get the hype. And it is exactly for the reason that you mentioned. I couldn’t figure out why it was bothering me a little bit, but this is it. Thank you for stating it so eloquently.

This is 100% how I feel. It’s frustrating for me to get into the dramatic/serious scenes when she writes the way she does. Kids are being forced into a war (trauma) college who are unalived left and right. Sorry, but reading through Violet’s juvenile pov doesn’t draw me in like it should.

This was my biggest issue. I felt like Violet falls flat a lot, and she’s not as strong/fleshed out as she could be.

As a fantasy reader all these TikTok popular books are very much the same. They are romantasy not fantasy. It’s very comparable to ACOTAR and TOG. I like it better for the simple fact that it has dragons 😭

I think with some books it’s clear the author was writing it with the hope it would become a TV show/Movie and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I love the the story but it’s pretty clear that’s what they’re doing.

This is exactly how I feel about this series. It feels YA but it isn’t. I think it’s partly the academy setting and the age of the characters, and also that they’re extremely tropey. I also enjoyed it but there’s no denying these things about the writing.
