Luxemburg was independed in 1867, has been since 1839 under the Treaty of London that gave Belgium its independence as well as a member of the German Confederation until its dissolution in 1866 and in personal union with The Netherlands until 1890 and a member of the Prussian Zollvereinfrom 1842-1919. What happened in 1866-67 was a spat between France and Prussia over who will take over as prior to its war with Austria, Bismark "suggested" Napoleon III have free reign Luxemburg and Belgium if they stayed out of the Austro Prussian war. What resulted was the Second Treaty of London, an affirmation of its independence and Neutrality, requiring all Prussian Garrisons to leave and for its fortifications to be dismantled, and the end to a war between Prussia and France... which ended up happening anyways 3 years later. It wasnt Luxemburg "breaking its chains" cause it was already free.
