book 1 is definitely the weakest so maybe temper your expectations a bit at the start 😅

You should read it one word at a time. Don’t jump around the page, picking out a letter here, a letter there, this syllable, that syllable. That won’t make the words as intended. It will be hard to understand the plot if you don’t read the words in order. Like, don’t read it backwards. Read it forwards. Top left to bottom right, not like a manga. It would be so confusing if you start at the back on the top right and work to the bottom left.
