@letsjuststartpodcast: Be careful who you choose for a reference. People will surprise you, and you need to warn someone taking the reference if there are any surprises coming. If they’re blunt, let them know they’re blunt. No surprises. #letsjuststartpodcast #lauraracky #christiancunningham #reference #references @Laura Racky @Christian Cunningham
Always select good mates as referees and nominated them as your past employer/manager!

As a recruiter, who interviews 10+ people a day. We base 80% of our decisions off a reference as they offer honest insight and do not accept references of any below a manager or head of department.

Exactly this-my ex best friend would make up blatant lies. Didn’t realise it was them till I narrowed it down to them everytime 😬

I received a call once to provide a reference for someone I worked with - I didn’t know they had put me down as a reference. Very awkward

Don’t give a reference. Just direct your new employer to your old jobs hr department. Do nothing beyond providing proof of employment.

Good idea to get a good friend to test call your referee's and see if they are actually giving you a good reference.

One of my references spoke badly about me and his wife got the job...so there's no confusion...she wasn't interviewed until after that reference check.

Colleagues that you work with for over 15 years, and who you thought were a friend can surprise you. Be careful with who you trust.

Yes. Talked bout this with my coworkers and half said they'd just say positive stuff. Other half said they were gonna think if there were some negatives and answer the same as if it was a performance review 🤨

I was looking for a second job that requires references as a must due to the field and i had to give them my current employer email, on one hand my current company was about to promote me for my performance on the other hand the reference they give was negative, jobs had different times so no way could effect each other. Not to count the amount of people/friends I helped before that had disappoint me. I got the job as hr and its real, everyone gives fake references.

Owwww this happened to me, had a death of a close family member in a past job had 4 weeks off (was supposed to be 2 but I was in grief so it was longer)- manager was so understanding at the time, 3 years later used her as a reference and she told the hiring manager I have had time off in the past for “stress/mental health leave” but did not mention a death - got the job anyway but wtf?

If you've ever had a bad feeling about someone at work, even just once, then never use this person as a reference. They can't be trusted.
