You could answer with some random answer like “I went deep sea diving with some sharks and then this happened” and follow quickly with “so how much do you get paid each week for this job and how much money do you have in your bank account? And when they get shocked that you’re asking such things, say, “ohhh, I thought we were asking personal questions about each other, I was just following your lead”

I’m not disabled, but I did have to walk with a cane when I injured my patella. Some lady in a shop told me I’m too young to need a cane and then did a full laying of hands and prayed for me. Can’t imagine having to deal with that nonsense every day.

I got the ‘but you don’t look disabled’ last week. I’m like ‘yep, there’s things called invisibile disabilities, you can’t always tell from what we look like on the outside’

I got this exact question when my kid was pushing me in my ambulatory wheelchair. It was awkward when I answered "I'm chronically ill". He said "sorry I thought you'd say you hurt your leg or something"

I think people gets very uncand dont know what to say, most of people ask because they care and others because they are curious, is up to us how we take it. I used a cane for a couple of years and I find out people was mostly kind, they offer me a seat or jump a cue. Imagine mental health worker and peer worker so I have an open book policy to rise awareness and educate people, including if someone is unkind I can tell them what will be a more appropriate wording. in my case I developed a standard answer, "chronic pain" I think that person panicked and couldn't word something more appropriate to say.

I recently got asked by a waiter where my assistant was because I use a wheelchair... he then when he saw me walk with a cane assumed I wouldn't need a caretaker because I could walk a bit. I really want to get better at looking ppl who say shit like that in the eye and tell them they're being very inappropriate and making me uncomfortable. but I also just want to be able to get dinner peacefully

I have CP and FND it’s easier for me to say I had a stroke and drop it like I do with a microphone- limp away. Ps love your walker that actually looks like I could use it without being a hassle
