@latimes: L.A. desperately needs more shade. So why were 77 palm trees planted near LACMA? In 2006, the Los Angeles City Council decreed that the city should limit further planting of Mexican fan palms as street trees except to fill in gaps in existing plantings and instead plant trees that help our environment. Nineteen years later, Mexican fan palms are still on L.A.’s list of acceptable street trees. This summer, at least 77 new fan palms have been planted along two blocks of Wilshire Boulevard near the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Becuase it’s wilshire, it’s iconic. Tourists don’t go to lacma to look at basic oak trees

Aesthetics matter too. Beauty matters. The palm tree is the symbol of Hollywood and Southern California worldwide. Let’s keep it alive.

This video completely fails to mention that palms need a ton of water. Most that are planted are not native and don’t support any local wildlife. We should be planting more native trees like oaks. This comment section is pmo. I want shade when I’m walking around!

I think palm trees of all varieties should continue to be planted on main streets throughout LA, ALONG with native trees. We can have both! Plant more native trees in neighborhoods. That's where the shade is needed to cool down homes and apartments.

MORE 👏SHADE 👏 We have enough palm trees, let’s be real. If you want more go live in Palm Springs.

Palm trees were the reason why the fires spread so quickly in palisades and Altadena

We can have both - palms along iconic boulevards and locations and more shade trees everywhere else

We don’t desperately need shade. There’s plenty of it all over the city. But we desperately do need to keep the palm trees here in LA forever, and if you weren’t born and raised here, you have no say.

Not concerned with tree choices at LACMA… we need more leafy trees in our neighborhoods

Palms might not be practical for shade, but they’re part of LA’s character, which is clearly what LACMA leaned into. Maybe hold Bass accountable for the real degradation of quality of life in LA instead.
