@sneezesandsnot: 🔎 University of Colorado Boulder (Anu Sharma’s lab) looked at adults with even mild hearing loss and found that their brains were already rewiring themselves. Using brain wave recordings (EEG), they showed: • The auditory cortex (hearing center) was less active. • The frontal cortex (thinking/decision-making center) and even visual areas lit up more—like the brain was “borrowing” extra resources to help process sound. 👉 The catch? While this helps in the short term, it also increases listening effort and can strain brain systems used for memory and attention. This may help explain why untreated hearing loss is linked to faster cognitive decline and dementia risk. 🎯 The good news: studies show that treating hearing loss early (with hearing aids or cochlear implants) can reverse some of these brain changes and restore more natural auditory processing. #hearingloss #dementia #hearingaids #brain #cognitivedecline

I keep telling my mom she needs to get hearing aids, she refuses. Doesn't see it as a priority. Even knowing it helps with dementia, she won't do it

Would this also apply to someone with auditory processing disorder?

I’ve done multiple hearing tests. I can hear one singular sound just fine so I always pass the tests. My issue is if there is background noise and someone tries to talk to me I literally can’t hear them. Anytime two noises are present at the same time I literally can’t understand it. Super fun

So my hearing loss and my brains attempt to compensate - could be why my short term memory lately are nonexistent?

I wanted to get my hearing checked so I scheduled an appointment with a place that only focuses on hearing issues. When I went in the doctor told me I was too young to have a hearing problem. It’s probably something else that I should see an ENT. My hearing was not checked. I was 47.

It’s too bad hearing aids are prohibitively expensive for so many people. My dad has been all too aware that he needs them, but he can’t afford them.

I can’t figure out if it’s me losing my hearing or if it’s everyone else with ADHD that are just mumblers. I seem to hear everything else fine. It’s just my wife and children.

Sugar has a powerful impact on the body. It often damages the smaller nerves first, and over time it can also down-regulate brain function. This is one of the hidden ways sugar affects our health beyond what most people realize.

My mom got hers checked after I mentioned it to her. The doctor told her it was normal “for her age”, she’s 60. So she didn’t pursue hearing aids. How do I encourage her to go back? Should I encourage her to go back?

My doc said that the hertz where my hearing loss is in the same hertz where kids and women usually speak. I said “WRITE THAT DOWN, I’m getting vindication today”

I’ve had tinnitus for almost 20 years, and only this year my dr agreed to send me to an audiologist to test my hearing. They said I was fine but it’s good to get a baseline so we know when things change in the future! But I’m frustrated that hearing tests are no longer part of the yearly physical at the drs office, then I’d already have baselines from my adult years

I was diagnosed with otosclerosis about ten years ago in my 30s. I thought my ear was clogged, so I saw an ENT. I had a hearing test and found out that I have severe hearing loss in my right ear and some hearing loss in my left ear.

Hearing loss dx in early 50’s. No reason for the loss other than genetic. I’d love to get in studies.

probably 50% of patients I examine over the age of 70 have hearing loss. I live in a high aircraft industry area. Thankfully the younger generation are better at wearing hearing protection.
