I realized years ago therapy just helps turn you back into good little worker bees for the capitalist system. It’s deeply unethical and inhumane

highly recommend acceptance and commitment therapy as it accepts that suffering is unavoidable

Genuine question: how do people not see the void? Ive seen it since i was a child. People think im joking when i say nothing is real, but im not. And not in a matrix-way. It’s just not real

absurdism and Taoism pulled me out of my nihilistic depression. it still took a while, but it worked.

I’m going to cry. Someone GETS IT. No amount of gratitude journaling will help. I’m ungrateful to even be alive!

As a neurodivergent person it’s a struggle to juggle the depressive realism with the justice sensitivity. A hopeless feeling combined with an impulse to change things is a real battle.

so grateful to my psychologist who pointed out some clients (like me) respond poorly to positive statements like "things will get better" and instead respond better to neutral statements like "things will change"

I don't get it. I'm going to die, I will stop existing. Why should I care about "being proud" of my life. I won't be here to feel that pride. Life is a struggle that end with nothing.

I’ve said this for years. For existential problems, you need a therapist that is very intelligent.

Personally. I don’t understand why people put so much weight on justifying their existence. We are alive and that’s it. I’m only here to experience the world. There’s no greater plot, It’s not that deep. And that’s totally ok 👍🏻.

As a therapist intern this is great content! Thx! Most therapists have done no work surrounding their own death anxiety so, working with clients that are in the void will really trigger most therapists. Therapists need to examine their own death anxiety, get good supervision or refer the client. Love this convo!

It’s a really poor therapist who can’t fold nihilism into to their work with a client. There’s an entire school of therapy that deals exclusively with this - existential psychotherapy

the bit about gratitude journals making it worse 🎯 i have felt insane because past therapists and friends and family say "just count your blessings! practice gratitude!" and that makes me feel worse because yeah i am better off than others but that's still bad so now what???

Had me right up until the end. ChatGPT is NOT good for anyone in any mental distress. It is an echochamber meant to agree with you, and is easily tricked into disregarding its own poorly programmed failsafes. Please DO NOT use ChatGPT for talk therapy or philosophical dialogue. That is so dangerous.

In my experience, you gotta push through nihilism and move into absurdism.

Jung was right in saying that a therapist can only take you as far as they’ve been. I should also add that many people think that therapy = CBT. There are much better approaches out there

why go into therapy then? it would be more beneficial to join a philosophy club and discuss nihilism there, whutout any expectations for 'improvement'

I am a therapist and have had so many clients be surprised when I validate their nihilism with kindness. I always lean into: maybe you’re right and there is no point. But what are the other possibilities? And how can you enjoy your time within that framework?

It's called being trauma informed. Sometimes negative beliefs are correct, and dismissing them as distortions is a mistake.
