I’ve lived in Salem for 12 years now. It’s not Portland, but I’ve had cars broken into in both South Salem and North Salem. An easy rule of thumb for this city is, if it’s flat it’s either a rougher area, or close to one. This includes west Salem which is basically its own little world. But the hills are where the neighborhoods are better. Portland road, Lancaster, i5… mission… and numbered streets those are your tougher pockets.

I would feel totally comfortable walking from one end of Salem to the other without any fear of crime. I've lived in and around Salem my entire life and I live in Salem now.

I live in NE salem, there was like a gang issue but it seems to have simmered down. It’s mostly homelessness & like heavy drug use but not the worst.

I have never been to Salem by myself so I have always felt safe but definitely have heard its not that safe from people that live there, I think you should talk about Cottage Grove if you haven’t already lol.

I like in southsalem. The area I live now is definitely safe. I used to live in north Salem (off wayside) it was definitely sketchy part of town.

Like Lancaster area has gotten a bit rough for women. South and west Salem seem fine and downtown was bad like 2023 but it’s also gotten much better. Just always be aware of your surroundings because problems tend to happen when there is no one around and the person thinks they can get away with it. Just think ahead. ✨I still feel safe downtown alone and I don’t in Portland..

I avoid downtown Salem. I never feel save but I also have two things to think that. I’m Hispanic and from California.

No joke. I had a man try to get into my truck in the middle of the day on a Tuesday at a Sally’s parking lot . No cars around me. It was SO OPEN. It was on Lancaster. Never sit in your cars. Lock the door before you even close it. Just be smart you’ll beok

also as a female I just avoid salem after 10pm. and if I have to go somewhere that late my husband goes with me or go with a friend.

One day at a time :
I live on the SE side and have had a few random things taken from my porch so I don’t put anything out I am attached to. My car got broken into once. That cost a fortune to fix. I’ve lived in worse areas than now.
