Great reasonable and logical perspective as always sir! I see it being more challenging for the guy who is starting out or who started in the last 2-3 years as cashflow is going to be lite. Might need some significant town job supplement into the operation for the first 5 years in this environment.

have we talked about cost to own? This seems to be the biggest variable I know of. On an average year I can run a 1200lb animal for a buck a day. I’m in Western wyoming.

your right on a normal year but another thing ya got to look at is drought. We all should be looking at that and prepare for it. but up here in newfoundland and the maritime of Canada we are in a drought and hay is utter crap and all of us are buying hay. now the price of claves is great but now that profit is going out the other way lol. 🤦 God love farming lol

This is hard for me to. Understand you need over 200 pair to even break everyone of them years. Now I guess you said it working off the farm so your personally are subsidizing

Well said, DL. I’ve bought Holstein bull calves to raise to finish for $25 all the way to $500. I’ve owned dairy cows for 20 years, and only milked on my own since 2022. I’ve sold cull cows for $.35/lb all the way to $1.75. I’m getting well over $1.20 for junky cows right now. It’s a lot like surfing; you can hang back and just ride the waves that look good to you. I’ve owned as few as 1-2 head, and now we have close to 500 head. Times are different now that we own a registered milking herd, but for the guys starting out, there are ways to game the system and get ahead. It takes patience.

Steady as she goes...the cattle business is not one that chases trends. Invest in the herd consistently and they will carry you thru. Love this 🙌
