@invitedinred: The rest of the story will be up later.. 😫 these dang horses won’t let me have one day! #Horsetok #horsetraining #Mare #redmare #appaloosa
Have you thought about hobble training her? She can still get out and graze, but she can’t get too far if she gets herself loose…

I would rather hobble her then put a halter and rope on, maybe that's an option to try?

Is a breakaway halter with the leather top strap an option? If she gets hooked on a post she can at least not completely injure herself. We have used them on our hard to catch horses in the past.

How is she getting out? Is she just running thru the fence/gate? That is very worrisome for her but also baby Harvey following 😬

A friend of mine used to have a horse that got out a lot and her trick. She buried a post in the middle of the paddock and tied him on a lunge line to that post so he couldn’t reach the edges. Also tripped the strength of the fencing. God don’t touch it 😬

Maybe get a leather halter for her? I keep a leather halter on one of my mares in the field. That way it’ll break if she gets it caught on something.

My gelding wears a collar because he is hard to catch, and we are surrounded by many many acres of government land where he could disappear if he got out. For whatever reason he thinks he’s caught if he’s wearing it and won’t run. They are breakaway so I’m not terribly concerned about him being caught on anything.

Is the option there to have a more permanent fence?

I had a gelding who loved to test my electric fence for weak points then bolt through it. Gonna sound silly, but I put a dog shock collar on his halter and whenever he went to touch the fence, he got a zap. He did it 3 times, and then never touched a fence again.

Have you considered a grazing hobble versus a halter and lead rope?

Here in Ky we use leather broodmare collars. They wear them 24/7 and have plates with names and phone numbers. Way harder to get off than a halter!

Can u leave the halter without the lead rope. The lead rope dangling makes it so much more dangerous

I have a gelding that we do this with as well not when he’s out in the pasture. But when we introduce new horses into the group, he is extremely aggressive in the halter and lead rope stops him before he can do real damage and allows him to settle in.
