I was speaking with a lawyer recently and she was saying that while the Indian Act is a mess it’s a mess that the tribes are at least familiar with and they know the rules of. So it’s hard to talk about changing or reforming it because nobody is sure they trust the government not to make things worse.

Here’s the root problem as i see it: as long as humans are involved in any part of any decision process, there are opportunities for corruption to be behind those decisions. Money will always rule for as long as we have it.

I think the best first step to move forward is to create the space for change before making the changes. like helping restore culture and spirituality which I think will help nations work together by healing community. from there I think the rest will happen naturally because people will be invested in change.

I know it’s a very in depth question. But given how so many Indigenous peoples share the issues with the act I wondered what First Nations people would want to do with the act if they could.

The changes you said that came by the first nation land management act, and the other colonial federal legislation you mentioned are still patriarchal in nature. There has been no changes it’s a sleight-of-hand. Don’t be fooled. I disagree wholeheartedly with your statement

That’s all policy driven by the govt. we are actively being removed from those pieces. The goal actually is to give self govt which is way different from self determination. It’s the white paper aka Assimilation. Hold the crown responsible. Don’t go with Canada policy.
