My world history teacher at college took advantage of the school being on quarters & would take winter in Minneapolis off and go to Cuba under teacher visa. Then he’d come back to teach Speing semester focusing in life in Cuba.

A student in my class once interrupted my discussion with a teacher by telling me “you’re looking at it wrong, you’re not gonna be proletariat, you’re gonna be the one making the extra money” I was so baffled I was speechless! Needless to say this student grew up to be proletariat like all of us!

For any teenagers reading this, you might have better luck with concurrent enrollment at your local community college or junior college. You spend less time, the classes tend to be better, and it’s more direct than the AP route

Today my history teacher (who I actually really liked until now because of how critical he was of the us gov) said that socialism is "good on paper but it is too optimistic because they all think we can have a utopia where everyone works together, which just ignores human nature" and I just wanted to scream. Instead, on the questions for our reading, I wrote about how greed leads to a low quality of life for all of us and how things would be better if the workers were in control of the means of production. Probably didn't change his mind or anything but I like to think I'm doing something.

This makes me so grateful for my 8th grade history teacher. He would deliver the textbook version and then be like: now buckle up because here is the down and dirt. no idea what his political affiliation was, but I learned more in that history class than many others.

So the way to do this without getting kicked out of school is to cite your sources and present them to the teacher in writing. Be relentless but keep your head and your rage in check. And bring sources. ((Did this in high school. The teacher actually said years later that she respected me deeply and she changed the way she did some things because of those interactions)) — Madeline has some fantastic resources and citations.

My APUSH teacher was so rad because he let us draw our own conclusions. He let me do my final project on how, in our current understanding, the sons of liberty would’ve been labeled domestic terrorists. He just used to call me the “angry red head” but in like… a caring way? Like it was an inside joke. Loved that guy.

my teacher made fun of me for saying i think "illegal" immigrants deserve the same treatment as legal citizens. another kid said something very similar to me and got agreed with..he was a boy. misogyny and being a jerk for the win ig :/

The fact your school even had a teacher with ties to a communist party is wild to me. I went to a very small school in the suburbs of southern Idaho. The most extreme left-leaning teach we had was probably a Centrist who favored Dems. Things got a little better once I went to college.
