@eunaeemily: It’s been almost a full year since I left for Korea to meet my family for the very first time. It’s impossible to remember all that’s happened. I find myself confused when I look at photos. I know the pictures are of me but are they really? I don’t recognize that person. I do feel envious of her — full of hope and expectation of not knowing what was going to happen next. She still had time to put an end to this. No one knows what happened between the car ride to Dulles and a week later in front of the adoption agency. How many times I almost backed out. I was thirty minutes late to the most important meeting of my life because I didn’t really plan on going through with it. I thought about ghosting everyone,to all of you here who see my posts and pretending like nothing ever happened. I’m glad I didn’t, of course. My life has been enriched in ways that I could have never imagined but it’s also ripped apart who I thought I was and what I care about. It feels impossible to fully respect the gravity of what was lost and what was gained. I keep telling you, my friends, myself that I’m ready to unpack it but that’s not really true. I don’t know how. How do you move forward knowing what you lost? Not even the imagined life you could have had but to see exactly where you would have fit? I’m too tired to explain to people how much it doesn’t matter that my life here was good, I want them to understand it should have never happened this way. I’m angry. Furious at the systems that put me in this position. Split between the love I have for my family in America while also being haunted by my 아빠 and 할머니 pain from our separation. I never feel like I’m where I’m supposed to be. When I’m there, I think how I should be here. When I’m here, all I can think about is getting back to where I should have never left. Pictures: They start from our meeting until the end of this first trip. As the days passed, I can see how we relaxed. How happy we both were. #koreanadoption #koreanadoptee #adopteevoices #adoptionjourney #adoptionstory #transracialadoptee

One of everything :
Oh, dear heart. The sheer complexity of it all: the interposed griefs and joys, and the broken *system* behind it all has been so clear though all your words here. You have nothing to explain. But I’ll listen to anything you say. ❤️🩹

Your story makes me smile but it also makes me cry. The longer I think about the nuances, the more sickened I become. It’s like something came along and capriciously ripped you from your life. You were torn from your country and culture. I don’t know how anyone would properly grieve this? Yes, no hate to your adoptive family. But the amount of loss, everything stolen from you… I think I would need to spend a lot of time crying. As a creative person, I think I’d need to try and process some of it through some kind of artistic expression. I honestly think even sackcloth and ashes wouldn’t feel like enough.

As I started following your journey, I anticipated you would go through painful moments. Never in my life did I anticipate this type of pain and grief and conflict you are feeling. I appreciate you sharing your story, you have educated us about the sadness and complexity of adoption we don't hear about. Wishing you and your family peace and joy, always.

Nobody can live in the in between - ppl with no experience of adoption assume reconnection will always have a positive outcome, but you’ve been put in a very difficult spot. I’m sorry life put you in this situation, and it’s not your fault.

How do you sum up a life time lived and the one lost? I don’t think you can. How can you contain feelings that are being felt with newness that was never promised? I don’t think we are supposed to be able to tie everything into neat little packages and stack them in the corners of our minds. Life is complicated and messy and unfair. But it’s also filled with new opportunities, and unexpected kindness and love. Two things can be true at the same time. You can love your family and the relationships you are choosing to build & and you can be heartbroken and grieve the lost history of what couple have and should have been. When I find that something feels overwhelming I’m not sure where to start and processing I think of the poem by Shel Silverstein how to eat a whale. You’ve never read it. It goes through all the ways that you could start to eat a whale but at the very end, the last line is that the only way to eat a whale is to just start. And it’s OK to just start with what feels manageable. 🥰
