@danglobalcitizen: “Hafu” is a term used in Japan, as well as in diaspora communities such as Peru, which is home to one of the largest Japanese communities outside of Japan. It refers to people of mixed Japanese heritage. In Lima, I spent time with two younger members of the Japanese “Nikkei” community, including Dan, who described the racism that “Hafu” like him faced from their peers in the Japanese-Peruvian school system.
