Huntsville, Alabama, has been called the "Rocket City" since the mid-1950s, when Dr. Wernher von Braun and his German rocket team's work on large ballistic missiles gained national attention and public enthusiasm. The nickname was popularized following a local editorial in 1953 and was solidified as the city became a hub for the U.S. space program, including the establishment of the Marshall Space Flight Center in 1960.
