This first week has been focused on establishing boundaries, structure, and clear expectations for Chips. When he first arrived, he was displaying the following behaviors: • Bolting from the crate without control. • Jumping on people and using his mouth on hands and arms hard enough to leave marks. • Difficulty leashing: handlers previously had to distract him with food or water just to clip a leash on without being bitten. • Extreme pulling on leash, with the potential to overpower his handlers. • Bolting through doors without waiting, no threshold training in place. • Resource guarding, including two bite incidents in the past. • Reactivity toward unfamiliar dogs and people. • Difficulty settling, constantly seeking stimulation and not knowing how to relax. These behaviors made daily life stressful for his family, rather than enjoyable. Over the course of this week, we worked on: •Crate manners: waiting calmly to be released instead of bolting out. • Leash manners: sitting calmly for leashing and unleashing. • Thresholds: waiting for release cues before leaving his spot or going through doors. • Impulse control: teaching the “out” command to release toys, hands, or arms. • Place command: learning to settle on a designated spot, which helps him practice relaxation and being comfortable with calm boredom. • Social communication: practicing body language awareness and appropriate play with our own dogs at home. Since Chips has a history of using his mouth to communicate frustration, our goal is to redirect this behavior rather than punish it. We are teaching him that releasing on command is rewarding and that calm choices bring positive outcomes. Ignoring unwanted behavior and redirecting him into structured commands (instead of correction alone) has proven far more effective with his temperament. • Chips now waits in his crate until released. • He can sit calmly to be leashed and unleashed. • He understands that he must wait at doors and thresholds until released. • He has started learning “out” and is beginning to reliably release toys and hands. • He has practiced settling on place, beginning to learn that calmness can be rewarding. • He is making progress in understanding dog body language when interacting with other dogs. Over the next three weeks, we will continue building on these foundations: • Expanding his impulse control around food, toys, and high value items to further reduce resource guarding. • Improving leash skills for calmer, more enjoyable walks. • Continuing structured socialization with dogs and people. • Reinforcing calmness and reliable responsiveness in higher distraction environments. Chips has already shown significant progress in just one week with structure and consistency.
