I've played Rimworld for thousand hours and I was cocky enough to think I could start Dwarf Fortress and just "play". Oh boy was I humbled after 5 hours of trial and error 😭😂😂❤️

I lost roughly 20 dwarves during the construction of a mist generator. I had channeled the river on the surface down 4 single tile holes down close to 60 or more z-levels. Had many, many dwarves fall essentially 60 stories and explode upon contact with the silver statues at the bottom. Took almost a year and many sacrifices to get the walkway closed up so that dwarves weren’t slipping into the river.

Oh, god. I had a hallway full of engraved slabs- like 40- dedicated to the dead people because of werebeasts. First it was a were-elk that was posing as a goblin, who infected a load of people. Then those were-elk attacked others and by the time I finished eradicating the infections- were-skink. Then more infections, what next? Were-cat, friendly because he was stuck socialising in the tavern before he attacked the fortresses pet bear. In the middle of that, a “high master gelder” came by and I just kind of went “this fort is clearly cursed”

I remember there was an actual book published on how to play Dwarf Fortress that was several hundred pages thick.
