I bought a bamboo maybe 10 years ago and it flowered and died the next year. It was a rollercoaster - "Wow, I didn't know bamboo flowered, I must be a great gardener... oh look it's dead"

Did the bamboo account for the time difference too?

maybe a telomere thing? the clones would (more or less) keep telomere damage from the parent, and then they'd continue to degrade at roughly the same rate. so at some point, the protein expression for "flower" would trigger roughly at the same time across all clones & the parent. that's just a best guess tho

This happened in Denmark in the 1990s. Apparently a lot of bamboo in gardens were from the same plant.

But how did they manage to track all of clones if they’d been distributed far & wide internationally, to confirm this? 🤔

do the seeds from a single plant have diverse genetic material so they each have their own clock timers. I wonder how much bamboo seeds cost.

Black bamboo is going through a flowing event right now, think it started around 2022 and is still going so takes a few years

Must have been very confusing for the people who owned it. They must have been completely bamboozled.

From judging it as a drama Queen I will uno-reverse that statement and claim it "the most synchronous plant". A way better title. 😊

wow, brilliant post. I've heard the similar fact about some trees that do similar, and on a much shorter time scale.. But a 120 year cycle, and on the cuttings/clones, is an amazing step beyond. incredible.

we have bamboo in our back garden. Mum planted a bit when we moved in 21 years ago, its now everywhere in the corned of that garden. we've finally started sorting the garden out after semi neglecting it and the bamboo battle is going to be a long hard fight 🥲

dont trees do this too? to stop squirrels eating all the nuts they all coordinate and drop INSANE numbers of nuts one year so that squirrels cant possibly eat all of them.
