I bought a bamboo maybe 10 years ago and it flowered and died the next year. It was a rollercoaster - "Wow, I didn't know bamboo flowered, I must be a great gardener... oh look it's dead"

I was in uni at the time (agricultural studies) and you can imagine the panic/hype when it happend 😂 The Y2K of the garden world and this did happen

maybe a telomere thing? the clones would (more or less) keep telomere damage from the parent, and then they'd continue to degrade at roughly the same rate. so at some point, the protein expression for "flower" would trigger roughly at the same time across all clones & the parent. that's just a best guess tho

This happened in Denmark in the 1990s. Apparently a lot of bamboo in gardens were from the same plant.

wow, brilliant post. I've heard the similar fact about some trees that do similar, and on a much shorter time scale.. But a 120 year cycle, and on the cuttings/clones, is an amazing step beyond. incredible.

we have bamboo in our back garden. Mum planted a bit when we moved in 21 years ago, its now everywhere in the corned of that garden. we've finally started sorting the garden out after semi neglecting it and the bamboo battle is going to be a long hard fight 🥲

dont trees do this too? to stop squirrels eating all the nuts they all coordinate and drop INSANE numbers of nuts one year so that squirrels cant possibly eat all of them.
