THE VAN GOGH HOUSE IN FLORIDA Follow me for more unique Florida history. In Mount Dora, Florida, there’s a house painted entirely in Van Gogh’s Starry Night. In 2017, Nancy Nemhauser and Lubek Jastrzebski had a mural painted on their boundary wall by artist Richard Barrenechea after noticing their adult son, who has autism, was repeatedly drawn to Starry Night. It was meant as a beacon so if he wandered off, he could tell people, “I live at the Van Gogh house.” City officials initially called the mural “graffiti” and fined the couple thousands, demanding it be removed or the wall be repainted to match the house. When told the wall had to match the house, the family responded by painting the house in the same Starry Night design, turning a simple wall into a full home canvas. They took Mount Dora to court, arguing their First Amendment rights were being violated. In 2018, the city settled, reversed the fines, issued a public apology, and officially allowed the mural to remain. In 2025, the house received a fresh coat of paint through @floridapaints “Paint a Brighter Day” program, which donated paint for the restoration. A new infinity symbol sculpture, designed by artists on the autism spectrum, was also added to the front yard. Located along Old U.S. 441, the Starry Night house isn’t just art, it’s a symbol of love, inclusion, and creative resistance.
