Fifth Street Ministries, tucked inside the former Avery Sherrill Elementary School since 1990, now shelters roughly 150 people a day and serves more than 64,000 meals a year. As Iredell County’s population jumped nearly 23% between 2018 and 2022, the pressure rose with it. By spring of 2024, the shelter had to do something it had never done before: start a waiting list. Outreach teams began seeing more tent encampments, more families in crisis, more people slipping through the cracks. Across the country, communities facing the same strain learned that one building — no matter how historic — cannot carry the full load alone. Counties in Arizona expanded their reach by partnering with cities to create hundreds of overflow beds. Pennsylvania converted older facilities into housing through public‑private teamwork. Federal grants now require shelters to braid services together: healthcare partnerships, mental‑health support, substance‑use treatment, long‑term housing commitments. Houston proved what that looks like in real time, reducing homelessness dramatically by weaving more than 100 partners into one coordinated network. For Statesville, that blueprint means any expansion of beds must come with embedded support — counseling, addiction treatment, job‑readiness programs — and a willingness to chase federal and state grants that demand collaboration, data‑sharing, and measurable outcomes.
