@xx_knife_xx: this is about DC but I'm sure it happens with other comics too. You don't have to read the comics to be a fan of characters who have existed and been popular for decades. but you should read comics before talking about specifics of a comic run or about a newer/less popular character. #dccomics #comcis #fandom #dc #batfam

Being a Wonder Woman fan is like this. A lot of dudebros have so much to say about her, her lore and her villains when they have never read a solo run of hers, or the only run they have read was with New 52 😒

Bc they’re not comic book fans. They’re comic book MOVIE, TV, VIDEO GAMES, etc… fans. Most haven’t read a comic book or gone to a comic book store.

Biggest pet peeve of mine. Once got told Tim was the longest running Robin. Even a single Google search would disprove that. Or having to actually argue that Grayson (the OG boy genius is a genius). I don’t mind people who are into DC for a specific niche, like WFA, or the DCAU- but when you want to talk about comics specifically, guys please read the comics. Rn lot of ‘comic,’ fans are playing this big game of telephone from posts and fanfic parroting the same things about tropes/events that don’t exist.

a lot of comic fans online are really just wiki fans. they’ll read the wiki for a character or a storyline and think that gives them the same knowledge as actually reading comics

I think it’s perfect ok to not like characters, or not find them interesting but to call story arcs and say they’re not good or they suck when you haven’t read it. Like I don’t like the Hulk but I’ll never say Imortal Hulk is trash because XYZ if I never read it.

they aren't comic book fans their super hero fans. They want to enjoy their faves through shows, films, games and aquire any knowledge they have to read as passively as possible.

I’m Ngl sometimes I do something similar in person except it’s just so I can get whoever I’m talking to, to stop trying to quiz me on my knowledge to try to prove I’m “not a real fan”. So I will pretend to know everything and then as soon as they walk away I’m always like “yeah so I lied about all of what I just said, disregard my opinion 🙏“

A lot of comic “fans” straight up, do not read comics. They consume all their information from sensationalised tik tok and YouTube short form content and memes. The other day I told a Batman fan Alfred’s been dead in the comics for 6 whole real world years and it blew their mind

I argued with someone who was completely wrong on Jason Todd's character and motivations, and when I pointed it out they said they don't read the comics but "I'm very thorough with reading character wikis"
CHARACTER WIKIS WON'T TELL YOU THE THEMES OF A STORY. IT'S A BAREBONE RECAP FOR CONVENIENCE NOT THE ACTUAL STORY.

I mentioned something that happened in a comic and somebody went "that's completely fanon why are you mischaracterizing them so much" so I pointed out the comic(s) the reference was from and they went "oh I never read those" so out of the two of us, one of us has read the comics to know who is and isn't being mischaracterized and it's not me

I have noticed that this happens no matter the company. another thing I've noticed is some people will see a feat or a form of a character on a site like Quora or Reddit and make claims about that character without ever actually reading the run where that happened.

it used to be from believing everything comic blogs wrote and now it's believing everything YouTubers and tik tokker say. Half the people that I met that hated Superman just repeated stuff from the covers posted on the old Superman is an Asshole blog

Idk sometimes it’s fun to bring up things in conversation. Like hell, never gonna read the Punisher run where he gets Heavenly weapons to fight demons, but that’s funny to bring up in a comic conversation. But I’m also willing to be right or wrong so that’s just me.
