Imma nerd out a bit here. The original strain of Harran Virus, seen in the first Dying Light, is actually a variant of rabies. It wasn't created by the GRE but the GRE did experiment with both the first strain and the second strain (introduced in the second game) though these were for slightly different reasons. Harran Virus was already deadly. It turned people into zombies and sent the city of Harran into disarray. The two most common types were Virals (recently turned) and Biters, who were virals that have been around long enough that they're rotting. There was also special infected that mutated for reasons I can't fully remember. These special infected included Goons (big strong zombies), bombers (exploding zombies), Demolishers (big charging zombies) and of course Volatiles. Volatiles are theorised to be Virals that spent time in the dark rather than the sunlight as well as around a lot of gore. The GRE was researching this strain to make a weapon. Eventually, a vaccine was created and mankind prevailed against the disease. Yay! That was until a new strain nicknamed THV broke out. This was definitely because of the GRE. They accidentally created this new strain during research. I don't know as much about this strain though because I haven't played as much of the second game.

volatiles are made in a a whole different way they cacoon a infected person the other varients just evolve as time goes on depending on a persons genetics and the only reason the others are out during the day is because they weren't enhanced by the virus for there to be much of a reaction to the sunlight

idk about other special infected but viral are people that recently turned or people that haven't lost all their humanity just yet and volatiles are created when virals are exposed to darkness for a long period of time not just 1 night
