Mental illness is serious, and a lot of people are not thinking rationally when incidents happen—they wouldn’t act that way in a sound state of mind. Police often approach people assuming criminal intent or danger instead of first understanding what’s actually going on. Automatically charging people with fines or pushing them into the court or psychiatric system doesn’t correct behavior—it just feeds the system. Accountability matters, but it should happen when the person is mentally capable, able to reflect, understand, and show remorse. Repeated fines and penalties without real correction are about money and control, not public safety or healing. Faking compliance to avoid punishment is not the same as real change—true correction only happens through understanding and free will.
