@davejorgenson: SCHOOLS ARE LOUD AGAIN Getting cell phones out of the classroom is a rare issue with significant bipartisan support, allowing a rapid adoption of policies across red and blue states alike. Some 31 states and the District of Columbia now restrict students' use of cell phones in schools, according to Education Week. Caption from article by Sequoia Carrillo, NPR
Teacher here. it has helped, but the kids that are going to avoid work will always find a way.

FWIW, as a parent, I personally hate this. We’ve had 2 active shooter situations within 15 minutes of me in the past 1-2yrs. I want my kids to be able to call 911 or me in an emergency. They can’t do that if their phone is in a locker.

Looking forward to when teachers are going to complain students are talking too much, being disruptive, disrespectful, and not doing work. Wonder what the new boogie man will be.

Our district banned phone use during the day. It’s been great. Behavior issues have gone way down.

Yeah, you don’t want the kids to be able to call their parents and tell them they’re about to be shot by a mass shooter. Or take pictures and let that get out into the news.

Nah as someone that graduated in 2019 and when I started high school they had JUST started rolling out the phone holders for classes it’s actually not teaching them anything? Teach them how to use it responsibly and when to use it and appropriate places to use it because now as an adult in jobs and in college it’s not being taken away like it is in high school, show them how to use it responsibly don’t teach that them that everything gets taken away

I hate to say it, but I think this is a good thing. These handheld skinner boxes are doing detrimental things to the brains of our youths in ways we don't even know yet

Kids do not need to be in constant contact with their parents. They can call their parents from the office like we did as kids. It won’t kill them

Teacher here. We implemented this last year and student engagement sky rocketed. However.. the kids who truly have no motivation still won’t do anything. It’s helped the kids who do actually care.

Teacher in Arizona. It’s amazing! Kids don’t care and they are talking to friends, doing more work and listening when classes are happening. It’s been awesome!!

If you’re so pressed about your kid needing a phone during the day, swap their smartphones for a candy bar Nokia. I’m sure it’ll be fine.

Cool that behavioral issues are down, but so many teachers use phones as a way to help engage students or research stuff or have them take photos of assignments or FOR assignments. It also limits letting students use their own laptops for assignments

I don’t care what anyone has to say about it, it’s bad. They need their phones for an emergency, if anything has been proven time and time again. It’s that schools CANNOT KEEP KIDS SAFE

Love that we are taking things away from kids instead of teaching the to self regulate and be responsible. 10/10 teaching

yeah no we should not be banning cell phones until we take care of the problems with teachers abusing power and abusing students, The bullying problems, and School shooters. also administrators abusing their power and abusing students as well

I feel like this is a weird take. It’s not a rule meant to encourage kids talking to each other it’s one to feed the school to jail pipeline by enforcing the rule with some kids and not others.
