I bought my husband a metal detector because he'd been saying he wanted one. I did the research, picked a good one, and he yelled at me because he actively ignored my birthday a few months prior. He said I only did it to make him look bad. We're alone in the desert and have no friends. There was no one to "make him look bad," in front of.

Í didn’t know that was abuse! I was made aware that every surprise/gift/birthday cake/holiday/picnic in the park was a complete disappointment which is why he had a completely disappointing life.

You explain the experience in a way that I could never seem to explain when talking it through with friends. I knew I felt icky in his presence all of the time but I gaslit myself into believe I was making mountains out of molehills. Literally everything bothered me and I thought I was crazy for being bothered by “normal” behavior

He bought you dead things that you then had to take care of. Not exactly an unselfish gift. Don’t get me wrong if someone buys me flowers with good intentions I’ll be grateful. They are lovely of course but to be honest flowers mean you have to look for a vase, maybe cut them to fit, add the preservative, clean up the wilted leaves that fall little buy little then thrown them away or press then whatever. It’s just not the most thoughtful gift.

I stopped with the gifts the year I was told "you actually did decent this time." I couldn't even be happy about finally doing ok after 10 years. Gave up.
