I’m a retired Det. Sgt. When I questioned people as witnesses i always told them “at this point you’re not being charged w any crime nor are you a suspect at this time. However that all depends on what is uncovered during the questioning”. I’ve interviewed people that were just witnesses & confessed during questioning with & without attorneys present. You never know what will be discovered in an investigation so people need to understand that. I also advised everyone I spoke to that it’d be best if they had an attorney but it was completely up to them.
