i had no idea people actually believed that, i joke that if dogs could be autistic mine would be because of his social, sensory, and self soothing behaviors that remind me of myself, but i thought it was common knowledge that only humans can have autism

people are brain dead and straight ableist if they would rather have the chance of their animal dying or getting so painfully sick that putting it down is the most humane thing to do, than let their have their pet have "autism"

Every time I've read one of the studies using rodent autism models (one studying maternal autoimmunity and another looking at microbiomes are the first examples I can think of) I always found it funny how they'd outline the behavioural traits through which they are defining their models followed by "here's how we gave the rats 'autism'" (I am paraphrasing extremely hyperbolically)

Like I've jokingly asked if dogs can have autism before. (looks over at my dog who hates change so much that he got upset when we moved his food bowl to a different spot in the same room.)

ppl need to understand animals (and even occasionally humans themselves) having "autistic traits" doesn't mean they ARE autistic. Not only is autism a HUMAN disorder, and it's very dehumanising to compare them to animals and suggest animals have autism. It also could be due to a million different things. Multiple conditions can have similar symptoms as another condition, that's nothing new
