![THE WRONG SCOREBOARD [39:9] Stop chasing reward. Start seeking impact. We’ve confused the goal. We weren’t created just to rack up good deeds like points on a scoreboard. Deeds were never the end — they’re the means. A path. A direction. Towards something far greater: the friendship of Allah ﷻ. We were created to be transformed. Allah ﷻwants more than words from us. He wants hearts that are purified. Tongues that are honest. Eyes that are modest. And that doesn’t come through empty repetition. It comes through presence. I once said: Doing 10,000 istighfār a day — without presence — is ineffective. And people got upset. But listen to Allah’s ﷻ words: قُلْ هَلْ يَسْتَوِي ٱلَّذِينَ يَعْلَمُونَ وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ “Say: Are those who know equal to those who do not know?” (Qur’an 39:9) Qul hal yastawī al-ladhīna yaʿlamūna wa-al-ladhīna lā yaʿlamūn Knowing what you say… outweighs saying it without knowing. And it changes everything. One sincere repentance — with presence — is worth more than ten thousand without. Yes, Allah ﷻis generous. He may reward your words, even when your heart is absent. He may even change you through them. But transformation? That only happens when the heart is awake. It’s not about how much you say. It’s about how much it changes you. Some of you quoted the scholars: Don’t abandon dhikr just because you lack presence. And that’s true. But that wasn’t a call to stay where you are. It was a call not to give up. Presence is a journey. And that advice was to keep you walking — not to keep you stuck. This is a call to grow. To aspire to something deeper. Yes — you’ll struggle. Yes — you’ll drift. But don’t settle. Presence begins in the heart. Because dhikr — true remembrance — is an act of the heart, witnessed by the tongue. You can do dhikr without words. But you can’t do it with words alone. If I ask you to remember something, and you say “yes” without thought — have you really remembered? So what is the dhikr of the heart? It’s carrying Allah ﷻ with you — not just on your lips, but in your awareness. In your silence. In your pause before speaking. In the way you walk into a room. It’s seeing His will, His attributes, His mercy — in everything, and reflecting them in your interactions It’s knowing He is with you, hearing you, seeing you, knowing you — in every moment. Words are meant to awaken that presence. Mindless repetition? That’s a contradiction. So stop counting.
