because they're trying to make a schedule to make sure everything is covered. if you just call out it throws everything into a little bit of chaos. this way if you request the time off then they know that it's coming and they can fill the shifts or distribute the work in a different way so that everything gets taken care of. it's basically consideration for your fellow employees not so much for the employer
