Agra’s Red Fort, also known simply as Agra Fort, is one of the most important monuments of Mughal India. Built primarily under Emperor Akbar between 1565 and 1573, it served as both a military stronghold and the main residence of the Mughal emperors until the mid-17th century, before the imperial court shifted to Delhi. Constructed from massive red sandstone, the fort stretches for about 2.5 kilometers along the Yamuna River, with towering walls and a deep moat that emphasized its defensive power. Within its fortified exterior lies a series of palaces, audience halls, and gardens that reflect the evolving tastes of the Mughal rulers. Akbar’s early constructions, such as the Jahangiri Mahal, reveal a blend of Islamic and Rajput architectural traditions, while later additions under Shah Jahan, including the white marble Khas Mahal and the delicate Moti Masjid, highlight the refined aesthetic of the emperor best known for the Taj Mahal. The fort also witnessed key episodes in Mughal history. Jahangir held court here, Shah Jahan was imprisoned within its walls by his son Aurangzeb, and it became a symbol of imperial decline during the 18th and 19th centuries as it fell under Maratha, Afghan, and eventually British control.
