so, as someone living in korea. the reason why they may not speak in korean back is because they can tell your korean isn't good enough to hold a normal convo. I've been here for close to 6 years now and am pretty advanced. havent had the whole weird back n forth thing happen for the last 3 years

Not all foreigners speak English too, but all Koreans speak Korean, so we are just expecting them to... speak on their language 😭

Oh very respectfully 🙏 It is usually because there are 3 formats of Korean 1) POETIC Korean 2) SOLDIER Korean 3) SPOKEN Korean and the first format POETIC Korean is the one that is taught.

It might be the accent tho 🥹 I never had an experience of people responding to me in English. 2 years ago, when my Korean was way worse, I had difficulties because nobody was speaking English to me and they would speak faster if I was asking to repeat something.

So pro tip (as a half Korean that currently lives in Korea), start the convo in Korean, if they answer in English, continue the conversation in Korean. Like your example, you ordered your coffee in Korean, they answered in English, you acknowledge what they said in Korean. It has worked for me here.

Truth. I frequently have this same kind of interaction, because I also attempt to speak Korean to everyone I encounter outside of work. Literally the ONLY people I speak English to are my foreigner friends and the people at my job because my students and their parents are not supposed to know that I can speak ANY Korean.

From a Korean: what the man says is true, a lot of Koreans are too accommodating to the point they reply in English when the foreigner actually spoke Korean to them. This is their brain automatically set to responding in English that they didn’t even perceive that you spoke Korean to them. Next, when they walk away and ignore you when you ask for help in English it’s because they’re too self conscious to expose the fact they’re English isn’t good enough to help you with your question. This is often misunderstood as them not liking you, rather than a lack of confidence on their part. Koreans also feel pressure from their own society to be good ambassadors so visitors report good experiences when they get back home, because they care about their global image more than the average country. This is because of their historic speed run from a developing nation to a developed one in just a few decades. Think of Korea as the ugly duckling freshman who had a glow up her sophomore year. She’s more popular now but still carries those insecurities.

I don’t know everyone has different experiences I guess it also depends on how natural you sound cause as a Latino whenever I try to speak to someone in Korean they usually catch on that I could def have a full conversation instead of just them trying to accommodate me by using English. They notice that it ends up being easier to communicate in Korean

maybe because you are in Seoul? regional areas prefer foreigners who speak in Korean, they love them.
