@dr.bioforever: Anemia is a condition where blood cannot carry enough oxygen to meet the needs of the body. Remember, oxygen is essential for cellular respiration to happen. If our blood can’t transport enough oxygen to our cells, our cells can’t produce the energy that they need to operate. This is why people with anemia often feel tired, weak, short of breath, etc. Basically their metabolism is working at low capacity. . The thing is that anemia can happen due to many different causes. So the treatment for anemia is different depending on the reason for the anemia, and unfortunately in some cases anemia can’t be cured. . In this video I show blood from patients with two different kinds of anemia: sickle cell anemia and iron deficiency anemia. . Sickle cell anemia happens because of a genetic mutation in the hemoglobin gene. The altered hemoglobin protein makes red blood cells change their normal biconcave shape into a rigid sickle shape. These sickled cells are more fragile and break apart easily, lowering the overall number of healthy red blood cells. They also tend to clump together and block small blood vessels, which causes pain and can lead to serious organ damage. There is no universal cure, but treatments such as medications that reduce sickling, blood transfusions, and in some cases bone marrow transplants can help manage the disease. . Iron deficiency anemia happens when the body does not have enough iron to make hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. Without enough iron, hemoglobin levels drop and oxygen transport becomes inefficient. This is one of the most common and most treatable types of anemia. The solution is usually to increase iron intake through diet or supplements, and in severe cases, with intravenous iron therapy. . For this video, I used a Leica ZOOM 200 stereoscope and an Olympus BX41 microscope at up to 1000X magnification. #microscopy #microscope #anemia #histology #blood

I have some cells that are sickle shaped (I am a carrier), and I have Iron deficiency. To see this is very interesting, but kind of scary too.
