David Bowie invented a FAKE club for long-haired men! 💈 In 1964, he was Davie Jones & trying to find fame with The Manish Boys; when they did get booked, the BBC told them they needed to chop their locks. His then-manager, Leslie Conn (the perfect name) turned the argument into a PR move, which worked & led to Bowie giving his first ever TV appearance. He was the spokesperson for the ‘Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men’… the irony being that the interview didn’t mention the music & so the single (and then band) flopped. However, it’s a great bit of Bowie history (not to be taken too seriously) which shows Bowie learning to fool the media, twist the narrative & lay the foundation for a lifetime of being ahead of the curve (his long-hair would reappear sporadically!) 😂 #davidbowie #bowie #ziggystardust #musichistory #longhairmen
