Northern Irish woman here, when my GP reported my abuse to the police (because I hadn’t as I didn’t think there would be a point) I was extensively questioned and then told it “wasn’t worth pursuing”. I was then told they would put my name and address on a database so if my abuser came to my home again and I called for help it would be “taken seriously”. Clearly implying without that database entry it wouldn’t be taken seriously.

We also have a horrendous victim blaming culture here. Horrendous. Women to other women, police to women, men to women. While men are pat on the back for bare minimum respect of women + kids. A man will be verbally abusive and manipulative, but he will be held up and praised. A woman reports violence, she's shunned, isolated, blamed and silenced. Nothings going to change unless men and police are held accountable.

Our police need looked at too. Their attitudes towards women and abuse is also continuing the problem. They are perpetrators too, so why would they side with victims when they don't see anything wrong with doing it themselves.

I live in Belfast. When I was punched in the back of the head multiple times by an older man and the police came, I reported it. The man then stalked me for months, knew where I lived and intimidated me when he seen me and threatened me. Then the police man who I was liaising with said I was better to drop it as it wouldnt go anywhere. I still see this man walking about and feel intimidated. This was 10 years ago.

my friend works in family support... she sees the escalation in DV here in NI... Addiction to drink and drugs, from the traumas ppl went through here, is a major factor. ✌️

Over 10 years, 26% of homicides, 51% of the population, 100% of the moral panic and outrage. Wouldn't matter if it was 1% of homicides the outrage would be the same because claiming victim status while demonising men is all this is about.

Police released my attacker on bail and failed to get an address for him so I couldn’t press charges. They just let him go.
