there is a veteran of WW2 who says he was in a giant aircraft hangar with a couple hundred newly drafted men, and nobody was doing much, but he looked across the hangar and saw a clipboard on the opposite wall, so he walked over to it, and turned it over and saw a list of things that needed to be routinely done, so he began ordering his fellow draftees around to do those tasks, and he said that is how he served in the war. no one ever appointed him the task assigner. he just let the clipboard be the boss.
