I always wear a hoodie for this reason. ticket goes in the pouch with my hand on it until I give it to the gate attendant.

I flew recently and was surprised that TSA only wanted my passport. I asked if that meant you no longer needed a boarding pass to go to the gate but they told me they check to make sure you have a boarding pass when they scan your ID
