I wish my mom was still alive to read these. I guess I'll have to do so in her honor.

I have all three. I don’t think it’s fair to say it is all downhill with the second book. He had the 68 comeback special, a triumphant return to Vegas, the Aloha from Hawaii special, and then his downfall. More of drop in his career, a stagnation for much of the 60’s, back in form from 68 - 73, and then that depressing decline to his death.

I heard an interview with the author on The Colonel and the King. He described so much more of a complicated relationship than I expected.

Peter Guralnick is a fabulous writer and I have every intention of buying this book without reading one review. You could also recommend Hitaville USA—the story of Stax Records. Not as famous as Presley’s narrative but equally as important.

I LOVED Last Train to Memphis! And yes, I am in no way into Elvis, but listened to an episode of Backlisted about it and had to pick it up. It was incredible.

Those 3 books would take me 3 years to read. 1 year if they’re page turners.

These look good. By the way, after your recommendation of The Heathens last week I read it. Finished it 2 days ago. I loved it. Had never heard of it but it was so good. I grew up in the country of the midwest and so much of it was familiar. I now live in Tasmania and am an Australian now. Thanks for this book, it took me back to my childhood.

Add in Guralnick's Sam Phillips The Man Who Invented Rock'n'Roll to this stack. Great read.
