Synthetics have a bad reputation within sustainable fashion movement for their non-biodegradable nature and fossil fuel origin. But in some cases, synthetic fibers are actually beneficial for particular types of apparel. Certain outerwear, puffer jackets in particular, have to have synthetic (most often, nylon) outer shells to be waterproof. Puffer jackets that are filled with down and feathers can lose their insulating properties if down gets wet. Most activewear is made of synthetic fibers for durability, elasticity and moisture-wicking properties. Sustainable alternatives are on the rise amongst activewear, but if sustainability is a concern to you (which, in this day and age, it should be), there is nothing wrong with shopping activewear second hand, a lot of which can be found unworn with tags! Other garments such wool coats or knitwear can also benefit from a small percentage of nylon (ballpark 20%). Truth is, even though 100% wool is great and is always the aim, quite often the wool can be of a rather subpar quality. Addition of nylon not only strengthens it but also helps keep moths away! With some extremely delicate fibres such as wool and alpaca, nylon presence is desirable to increase durability. Trench coats are another example. Yes, these days it isn’t hard to find trench coats made out of 100% cotton gabardine (some are even organic cotton!) but it’s not the end of the world if a trench coat you found second hand has polyester in the blend. Often it is added for increased water-repellent properties and durability. The famous Homme Plisse also are the perfect example of garments that have to be made out of synthetics for the pleated designs to be permanent. Even though recycled synthetic fibres are gaining more popularity, a sweater with some recycled polyester in it from H&M is still not a sustainable buy. Recycled synthetics are great where they are needed. Also, it is often difficult to tell if recycled synthetic content came from pre or post-consumer waste.
