As a learner I would muuuch rather be corrected in German so I don’t go around making more mistakes than I need to, the only time it would really bother me is if it’s a rule I know but decided to ignore on purpose bc even native speakers don’t follow it lol

i think it's in part because we're super excited when someone makes the effort to learn our language so we can be a bit quick to correct someone because we want to "do our part"

As a German 🇩🇪 who also sometimes corrects people, we really mean this in a positive way to help you learn it correctly. If no one tells you what you're doing "wrong," you'll never get it right.

I'm German and we just need to correct you but never ask a German what the gender of Nutella is because None of us know Because it's Die Nutella But also das Nutella So you can say both ( ◍ • ᴗ • ◍ )

My German husband made fun of me for an hour yesterday for how I pronounce Fleish on the phone to his mother. She ended up telling him to be nice to me 🤣

We appreciate a lot when somebody takes the burden to learn our language. We love those few, those happy few. But we know our language can be quite tricky and since we consider it to be quite precise, we want to help any of them the pitfalls of twisting the meaning of a sentence by neglecting small, but important bits. It‘s not nitpickery or common malice, we really want to help.
