During his ruling Thursday in Washington, D.C., U.S. District Judge Zia Faruqui condemned the Justice Department for bringing “embarrassment and shame” on the government during Trump’s federal takeover of D.C. policing. The rebuke came in the case of Edward Dana, a man arrested in August after allegedly breaking property at a D.C. restaurant and later accused by prosecutors of threatening to kill President Trump and a police officer while in custody. Dana was jailed for a week before the DOJ abruptly dropped the felony threat charge just 30 minutes before his preliminary hearing. Faruqui apologized to Dana in court, saying the department’s rush to charge and repeated dismissal of cases shows “too many mistakes” and “too many misfires.” He warned the government’s message to “people who look like Mr. Dana” is to “be very afraid,” adding that the U.S. is “past the point of constitutional crisis.” At the end of the hearing, Faruqui looked at Dana, who is a person of color, and said the government’s message to “people who look like Mr. Dana” is “be very afraid,” before adding, “I’m afraid right now.” CBS News' Scott MacFarlane explains more of what happened in court. #dc #washingtondc #washington #news #politics
