As Peter says in 1 Peter 3:20-21, Noah was saved from the water because he was inside the ark, sealed with pitch. The antitype is now that we are saved through baptism, which is being in Christ (our ark), sealed with the Holy Spirit. Then you are “water baptized” to symbolize going through the water. The water represents death. You’re not baptized in water, you’re baptized into Christ, in order to be free from sin and death. The common response is, “the Bible doesn’t say water baptism is just an outward confession”, but it is. Like in Roman’s 4, Paul says you were baptized into death with Christ. Like John the Baptist said, I baptize with water, but he who comes after me baptized with the Holy Spirt and fire. Baptism is into Christ, not water. It’s the purification of your heart and mind and having a good conscience towards God. The water is going to dry off, but your heart and mind will be changed forever.

So if the “diagnostic presupposition” is that baptism must be salvific because some verses link it to forgiveness or regeneration, then Paul’s logic in Romans 4 dismantles that: signs follow faith; they don’t create it

It's baptism of the spirit not water. I've only met one priest who is fire filled speaking in tounges and what follows him is prophetic healing demons run from him as soon as he speaks. I do the same. I don't see the fire in the catholic church. Salvation is by faith and grace only not by water. When Jesus died it was by spirit just as John said. I verily baptise with water but he who is greater than I shall BAPTIZE with the spirit and with fire. It went from outer to inner. John did that to prepare people for burial. Jesus spoke of another baptism which was spirit and fire.

If baptism is the instrument through which grace is delivered, how do you make sense of Paul saying, “Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel” (1 Corinthians 1:17)? How could Paul separate baptism from the gospel if baptism were essential for salvation?

I don’t have to limit myself to “baptism verses” to show that salvation comes through faith alone — because the entire testimony of Scripture, from Jesus to the apostles, already makes that clear. Jesus said, “Whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16), and again, “Whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life” (John 5:24). The thief on the cross was never baptized, yet Jesus Himself promised, “Today you will be with Me in paradise.” Paul wrote that we are “saved by grace through faith, not by works” (Eph 2:8-9) and that “if you confess with your mouth and believe in your heart, you will be saved” (Rom 10:9-10). He even said, “Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel” (1 Cor 1:17) — proving baptism follows salvation, it doesn’t cause it. Baptism is a beautiful and necessary act of obedience that identifies us publicly with Christ, but it’s the blood of Jesus that cleanses, not the water. The consistent theme of Scripture is that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, and baptism is the outward declaration of that inward reality
