You can’t take the tribalism out of religion because tribalism is fundamental to religion. Everyone on earth could be following the same religion, and we would just start battling each other over which sect is right (already happens within the different religions).

I'm in a similar conundrum. Me being one who walked away from Islam, pretty much same song, slightly different instrumentation. What I've found is with all the altruistic possibilities, it is hard to really check ego inflation. In a sufi-paradigm, it's so easy to ignore 'veils of light'. It se3ms that this germ is hard to circumvent. Also you mentioning doing g religion better, wow only a former believer would suffer such a bitter pill, because you and I know it's really not satisfying. And all the lightworking, and ego killing we must tire at chasing ones tail, but if I could offer anything to ppl due to my experience of inner peace is this....sit and observe oneself honestly and perhaps start with subtraction it helps mitigate fear, and see what truly remains. Good luck to everyone, the journey is truly worth it, the storm persists if it truly persists anyhow, truly maintain faith and trust that reality can never be as bad as one may think.

I am happily Nihilistic. I find it very liberating. Anyone who’s chosen Nihilism is likely not going to be attracted to the things you see as positives in religion—ritual, community, etc.

I always respect what you sway, but I think humans will always find a way to act like fundamentalism or authoritarianism if a person or a group feels threatened regardless if it's religious or secular

Impractical as it may be, to truly move past religion and solve for the mental/emotional strain of realism, we have to move towards becoming HUMANITY. Not American, Europeans, Chinese, or a skin color. We have to be a society as a species that collectively works towards our advancement with minimal suffering.

Wouldn't humanism fill the gap? I'm atheist and always felt the arrogance of religions as being the only source of morality and framework for a life well lived, appaling. It would remove a layer, that is inherently patriarchial, hierarchical, fundamentalist, and money and power oriented, and go directly to the one thing, that we all have in common. Humanity.

We need the structure of religion available to the public without the supernatural nonsense, ie weekly meetings, age specific comunity activities, group singing from song books with helpful secular lyrics, etc. In its current state religion is not a public good. Imaginary conflict causes distress in the minds of the indoctrinated, and it’s definitely not good for children. In its current form, most religion is just a bunch of unhelpful misinformation. We can, however learn from the structure of religion, which has developed and evolved over millennium to keep people engaged, and create a secular organization that follows scientific principles in its programing, is educational and helpful for members of society, is community building, and uses the scientific method in a way that it does not get stuck in a cycle of dogma.

it's the lesson of the book Animal Farm. Religions are like the OG farmers. The animals overthrow them for something better. something more equal. eventually leaders realize some are "more equal than others" & become like the farmers they rose up to replace.
