I don't think you're addressing the genuine despair and hopelessness that exists right now after we lost over a million people bc billionaires needed yachts. The complete abandonment by political leaders. People can't conjure up hope where they don't see it

As a Ukrainian, I have a full time job, bills to pay and I continue surviving. The first few days of full scale invasion felt like the end. But the world didn’t stop. My region is attacked by russian missiles/drones every night. Sleepless nights followed by workdays in corporate. Hope is all I have. The simple things, little happy rituals really help. And spite, like a lot of spite and hatred turned to fuel. “Oh you want me dead? Watch this!”. Human brain is honestly amazing. I have witnessed so much horror and cruelty, but I’m still gentle, I still laugh and dream.. Idk, just felt like sharing

well... back in the day they had hope, they had an ability to imagine future. our problem is that we live in a futureless present. we don't see tragedy, we live without an ability to see or imagine future.

People who think like that don’t plan for the future and don’t work to make sure the future is better for the next generation. A lot of religious people are a continuous state of fear of the rapture and don’t contribute to society in the way that they should because of this.

I think about this all the time. Humans have and always will persevere no matter the circumstances.

I think your perspective is interesting but as a disabled person with a lot of illnesses, my life has become harder every year at such high speed and I know that if things get harder, which they will, I will be chosen for death because we watched it happen over the past 6 years of Covid

I think it's also less "the world is ending" and more "the world I imagined I'd spend my future in is less and less likely to exist when I get there, and so it is ending"

Its not the death of the future, its the death of the imagined future. It's hard to plan for an unknown future, especially when millenials down have basically had the rug pulled out from under them. None of us are sure what to do next.

I think this is an easy optimism to have when you are of the cohort of people that will always be picked to survive. Framing peoples sense of hopelessness as a personal failing or a lack of will feels unfair, many people’s worlds are ending quicker than others.

I’ve recently realized that I’ve abandoned pretty much anything that I used to love (art, activism, etc.) and replaced it with a general pessimism.. and I’ve realized that it’s making me miserable and lost.

I want to agree with you and I do quite a bit (I know a lot of history). But the climate crisis is a unique threat. Billionaires will not let the climate crisis be dealt with. Humanity has never faced something like this before and people can feel that.

YES YES YES YES YES! thank you so much for saying this, i’ve been telling it to everyone who will listen. Things are getting worse, but there were so many times in history where things were horrible and they GOT BETTER. people came together and worked and created a better future. i’m absolutely going to be reading your article

it's too hard for people to admit that their privilege insulates them from the stuff they're afraid of. war and political instability and climate change are all here already. if it's still a future tense thing for you, you have privilege.

Like people completely giving up on retirement. I’m in a fuckton of debt and I still save and invest for retirement because I see my future and it’s bright. If it’s not, at least I won’t be broke when it all crashes down on me
